Sweet Potatoes


Sweet potatoes are a kind of root vegetable. There are many varieties of this vegetable eaten all over the world. The flesh of a sweet potato, for example, can come in various colours and tints from yellows to oranges and purples.

Sweet potatoes can be cooked in various ways - they can, for example, be fried, baked, boiled and steamed. They can also be used in sweet dishes such as sweet potato pie. The vegetables leaves can also be eaten but these are not as popularly used as the potatoes themselves.

Sweet potatoes tend to be grown in warm countries and are a staple diet for many cultures. It is, for example, quite common to find sweet potatoes used as part of Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and American cuisines. Nowadays, given the availability of the vegetable they are also eaten all over the world including in countries in which they are not grown.

Sweet potatoes are held to be one of the best vegetables to eat in terms of nutritional content. They are fibre rich and also contain beta carotene and vitamins C and B. Although often referred to as yams, sweet potatoes are not actually of this family.
